E.L.F. Therapeutic Conditioning Balm Review

I picked up the E.L.F Therapeutic Conditioning Balm the other day at Target. I love lip balm so when I saw this and it was only a $1, I just had to pick it up.

This lip treatment was...eh. It glides on smoothly, but it just sits on the lips and doesn't really moisturize them. I purchased the Strawberry Creme flavor. The scent is not overpowering and it doesn't have a taste, which is a good thing for me.

Overall, I don't think I would purchase this again. It was not completely bad, but I could spend a few more dollars on a better product and have something I am completely happy with. Give it a try if you'd like. Some people gave it really great reviews and at $1 you don't have to worry about it setting you back if you do not like it.

Those were the three words that my brain found first. Let me elaborate.

I saw one of those brain tests as I was wasting my life away on Tumblr. There was a grid with what seemed to be just a bunch of random letters. The test said, "The first three words that you find describe you."

The first word I found...beautiful.

The second word I found...broken.

The third word I found...funny.

Scary.

Finding "broken" surprised me.

Tired, yes. Stressed, yes. Frustrated, yes. But broken? Maybe the three of these add up to being broken? Don't know.

Maybe it's just a stupid little test meant for entertainment only.

Or maybe it's time for a very long talk with God.

Being Misled in the Natural Hair Community

You guys know what I mean. You see a women with her hair in it's natural state, down to her ankles, and she says she's been natural for only 2 years. Your jaw drops and you secretly wish your hair grew six inches a month like hers. Then you find out...she transitioned from relaxed to natural hair for 12 years and she only considered herself natural until she cut off that last quarter inch of relaxed hair.

Another scenario. You see a women with her hair in it's natural state. She says she just "washed and went" (otherwise known as a "wash and go") but in reality it takes her up to 5 hours post shampooing to get the curls just right.

I'm not taking shots at anyone...I'm just stating some of the things that I have observed over the years.

This is for the women who are contemplating going natural...don't be discouraged because you think your hair will never grow as long as this one or your curls will not 'pop' like that one. You never know what technicalities or hoops and rings of fire they have jumped through to get their hair in a particular state. Do your research, see what works for you and have fun.

This was love at first listen and I did not know why.... it was just Rih Rih singing over a super techno dance track. After multiple listens, I paid attention to the lyrics... "we found love in a hopeless place...". That was it. Those very simple lyrics spoke to me. I too found love in a very hopeless place, therefore it is no surprise that I lost it.

Though Rihanna is singing about love she lost/let go/couldn't have, she is still making us dance.

My Fashion's Night Out consisted of meeting Solange Knowles. No free drinks. No free cupcakes. No giveaways.

My favorite singer/DJ took pictures with fans and DJ'd at Lord & Taylor on 5th Avenue.

Let me tell you she is so sweet and absolutely GORGEOUS! I told her how she was beautiful and she said I was too! I died! She also complimented me on my shirt.

After meeting with fans, she began to DJ and like always, she played an amazing mix of music. She had the crowd singing and dancing like we were in one big house party.

I didn't go anywhere else after that, planned on it, but it didn't happen. I was pretty much content.

Hope all that went had an amazing Fashion's Night Out. I would love to hear your stories!

I'll call this a review instead of a haul because I only have two to share with you.

NYX Round Lipstick in Rose

First up is Rose. Not a fan. The color itself is not bad, but the shimmer is horrible. The picture is not really showing how severe (for lack of a better word) the shimmer is. It's kind of like a bad 80's frosty cheap pink. It also goes on very rough, so it feels like there's glitter in the formula instead of shimmer. I will not buy this again.

NYX Round Lipstick in Fig

Next is Fig and I love love love this color. I should have included it in the nude haul because it looks like I have on a tinted moisturizer instead of a lipstick. Unlike Rose, and much like the other colors I reviewed, it goes on very smooth. Will probably wear this as an everyday color.

It's inspired by the whole lemons/lemonade quote, and that I found a dress that didn't fit me perfectly, but it was everything I was looking for in a dress. I bought it and I'm happy I did, because I can just get it tailored.

This is how I look at my life. It has everything I need and everything I want. Maybe sometimes the world feels a little too big or I feel a little too small, but if I alter my thinking a little, I realize that my life is tailor made just for me. :)

My first attempt at wearing my hair "as is" after shampooing.

I never ever use enough product the first go round, so my hair always looks best on the second, third, umm sixth day after I wash it. I just don't want my hair to look like I used too much product...if that makes sense.

This is the result of a little Mixed Silk leave-in conditioner, a little jojoba oil and a diffuser that I put down after about 15 minutes because my arm became tired (also my first time using a diffuser). So my hair essentially air dried.

I guess I'll eventually give the diffuser another try, one day.

The post featured the founder of Concrete Loop and she mentioned that Rochelle Jordan was an up and coming artist to look out for. I listened to her song 'How to Feel' and I instantly fell in love with her sound (and her hair).

Dark denim, beautiful blouse, great pair of shoes, an awesome bag and jewelry and you're set.

As a person who cannot find a pair of jeans that fit me properly to save my life, I prefer the look using a skirt or dress.

NYX Round Lipstick Haul: Nude(ish)

To keep up the beauty momentum from my last post, I've chosen to do a lipstick haul of my new favorite brand, NYX. I heard such good things about the brand that I purchased (more than) a few of their round lipsticks during Cherry Culture's NYX Summer Sale. And for a $1.99 how could I have resisted. First up are my nude (ish) colors.

I say nude (ish) because there is not one nude color for everyone. Nude for brown girls such as myself and those who are of a lighter skin tone are not the same. The first two swatches are not even nude on me, but they work as a nude for darker complexion women, and I thought they looked great on them so I tried them out.

Overall, I LOVE NYX Round Lipsticks. They go on super smooth and the color lasts. They don't make my lips feel dry which is also a plus.

Burt's Bees Natural Hand Sanitizer- I was never big on hand sanitizer. I like good old fashioned soap and water, but when I saw this natural sanitizer, I was all for it.

Dress Code: Black and White

So I've touched on All Black and All White, quite naturally the next dress code would be Black and White.

Events where guests are required to wear Black and White attire are typically and traditionally formal events. One can either wear all black, all white or blended, which is black and white.

Now since this is 2011, the rules can be bended and Black and White affairs do not have to be formal, though I do recommend that one doesn't go completely casual. Keep it chic, you know?

There is one rule though that I thinks should be adhered to whether formal or otherwise and that is :

SOLID BLACK AND WHITE ONLY. NO PRINTS OR PATTERNS.

This is the latest song and video from Indigo Charlie, former assistant to Solange Knowles. This young lady is cute as a button and has great personal style. I've followed her since she appeared on many of my favorite Natural Hair Care blogs. Check out her curly fro, it's amazing.

I must admit that I love her style more than her music. This is only her third song so I guess she will get better with time. The music is always great, but the lyrics are always lukewarm to me.

I gave 'Cool Love' a listen and I love the upbeat music and the video is kinda trippy... in a good way. I like trippy. It's something fun to play in the background whilst getting ready to hang out with friends.

I was never a huge fan of the pink and red color combination, but when trying to get the most out of your wardrobe without spending money, you may try things you've never done. I just so happened to pair this tank and skirt together, and loved the way the color combo looked. I usually wear a white tee with this skirt, but that became boring.

I think combining colors will be my new thing to spice up my wardrobe. It keeps things simple, but with a little twist.

The next dress code in the series is "All Black". Wearing all black can look very chic or very boring. Yes, one can always go the LBD route, but lets do something different.

I suggest keeping the look fun with a playful top and skinny jeans. A fun top will prevent one from looking like they are headed to a funeral. Though this is an all black look, I still think there should be a pop of color somewhere and what better place than on your feet. Simple black earrings and a cute clutch will finish the look.

Cute details and pops of color will give style and personality to a potentially boring color.

I said in my post 'Dress Codes' that I will highlight different dress codes for the dress code challenged and the first in the series will be the infamous all-white. It's summer and you are bound to find your fair share of all-white affairs. I am not a fan of them, but if one must go to on then one must go looking amazing. I think the key to having a successful all white affair is to make it very classy. Anything less and you're sure to have a room full of tacky.

A dress is your best bet. You won't run the risk of having two different color whites (you know what I mean). As for the shoes, a nude shoe is best. Now I'm not totally into following fashion rules, but if there is one that I must follow it is no white pumps. I can't stand white pumps. You can find a cute pair of white casual flats or sandals, but when it comes to something dressy, I say leave white alone and go for nude. Lastly, get a great earring and a great clutch and you're good to go enjoy yourself.

Savage Beauty

Yesterday I took a trip to the Met to see the Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty exhibit. Waited an hour and had to jumble through a ton of people. Not exactly my idea of a good time, but I digress.

Eerie. Dark. Brilliant. Works of art. More art than fashion.

See the thing is, I don't get Alexander McQueen's genius and never will and that is ok. He is an artist and not everyone is going to be able to understand what the artist is trying to say. I feel like his pieces should be hanging in a museum where art buffs analyze them or whatever art people do with art. Some pieces I loved and others, I was left scratching my head.

But of course this is only my little old opinion.

Two-Strand Twists

The width of each twist

I decided to twist my hair. I was inspired by KinkyKurlyQueen of Naturally Obsessed. I figured it was about time I put my hair in a protective style. My hair is at a length that I feel comfortable wearing it in twists and since it's summer and I've been lazy, what better time.

I'm not sure how long they are going to last because I think I blow dried my hair too straight. We'll see how it goes. If anyone has a few tips for me to try next time, please feel free to share!

*Detangled in the shower in 3 sections: 2 in the front and a section in the back

*Shampooed and conditioned in those sections

*After shampooing and conditioning, applied leave-in and moisturizer

*Blow-dried on medium heat (in same sections)

*Parted and twisted away! (in same sections)

Revlon Super Lustrous Lipgloss

I picked up Revlon's Super Lustrous Lipgloss at Target about a week ago. Went there to get one thing and came out with a lot of stuff I didn't intend on buying (as usual with Target trips) and this is one of those items.

The color is Lilac Pastelle and it's very similar to a color I was interested in at MAC. When I saw the Revlon version I couldn't pass it up, especially with it being only $5.99, compared to the $14.00 I would have spent at MAC.

I love it. It's not too sticky, you don't need a thousand coats for the color to show up and I love the scent. I'm definitely going to pick up a few other colors.

Dress Codes

Whenever I'm invited to an event I always ask about the dress code...ALWAYS. Not that it really matters because my experiences have been 1) When I get to the venue everyone is doing their own thing with regards to style and 2) I usually feel overdressed. My view is that it's better to be overdressed than underdressed.

Have any of you experienced this? Feel the same way?

Black Women Can't Cook

So before I start I would like to say that I am completely tired of all of the articles about Black women this, Black women that, buuuut... I will add my two cents. I do have a voice, right? Ok so....

The "why Black (American) women don't cook" question came up recently with a group of friends. I don't even know how it came up. When it was posed to the group my thoughts were, "Really? You know every Black American woman in the world and all of them can't cook?"... "I can't cook, but the young lady to my right can cook her ass off".

The Black women can't/won't/don't cook statement is a blanket statement. I hear this all the time and again, I am tired of these conversations, but I'm even more tired of the fact that we still make these blanket statements about one another. On the one hand we preach that we as women and as Black people should all love and embrace one another, but on the other hand we choose to believe negative stereotypes of our different cultures; all in the name of finding ourselves superior. It shows insecurities and it shows ignorance, and I don't know why, but it still boggles my mind.

So to everyone who believes with their heart of hearts that Black American women can't/won't/don't cook and are beaming with pride because you think that EVERY woman in your culture can, I say this:

Knowing one Black American woman doesn't mean you know all Black American women (Just thought I'd start with this).
I know many Black American women who cook, cook well, and love to do so.
Maybe the Black American women that you met that couldn't cook, just don't like to or were not interested. It happens.
And lastly.........Want to come to dinner?

It's here. Finally, it's here. I didn't listen to the album when it leaked so despite my fears about whether the album would be good, I was still excited about it. Maybe more excited because she is actually back on the scene rather than the fact that she has new music out, because let's face it..'Run the World (Girls)' would suck if it didn't have such an awesome video. And '1+1'... horrid.

I've listened to the whole album and 4 is a very appropriate name because I only like about 4 songs. She seemed to make an attempt to take it back to good ol' 90's R & B with some songs, but failed. I was hoping that this would be an awesome album, but I'm left wanting more. Maybe if I listen to the album once more it'll grow on me. *shrugs*

I am a natural haired girl. No relaxer, no dye, no nothing. My staple hair style is a braid out. The one pictured is day one and I used a new conditioner, CHI Nourish Intense silk hair masque for coarse hair. This stuff is great! It moisturized my hair beautifully and my curls clumped like magic. This will definitely be a staple in my regimen.

It is one of my favorite short stories. I read it in elementary school and I still remember it to this day. It is about a young girl who moves to Venus from Earth with her family. It rains constantly on Venus with the sun shining for only 2 hours every 7 years. She's depressed by the lack of sunshine and is bullied by the other children. On the day the sun came out, her bullies locked her in the closet and forgot about her!!! She didn't get to experience what she had been longing for. *Le Sigh*

If you don't know the story you should definitely look it up. It's a gem.

American Apparel CEO in trouble AGAIN

Dov Charney, American Apparel CEO and founder, is being sued by a former employee for allegedly making her his 'sex slave'. When I read the headline, I was thinking..."hmmm what's going on in their factories in 'insert third world country here'?" (Horrible of me, right?) But then I remembered American Apparel's clothes are manufactured right here in the good ol' US of A. So, I read on.

Turns out, the woman claims that Charney held her prisoner in his apartment on her 18th birthday and forced her to perform sex acts on him. Alleged forced sex between the two took place over a span of eight months, but she claimed that she was too emotionally scarred to report it. I don't know. This guys has been in trouble before for being a sexual beast. Best of luck to both parties involved.

Beyonce is featured on the cover and inside L'Officiel Magazine's 90th anniversary issue. She poses for an "African Queen" shoot, which pays homage to musician and political activist Fela Kuti. In the shoot her face is darkened, so quite naturally some cry ------> BLACKFACE!

Blackface was a form of entertainment that portrayed racist stereotypes of Black Americans. White entertainers would paint their faces black with burnt cork and paint their lips red.

Blackface is a caricature; an exaggerated version of negative stereotypes. Beyonce is posing as a beautiful African queen while paying tribute to a political and musical legend. So relax people. Relax.

I LOVE In Living Color. Live performances, hilarious/brilliant sketches (great mix of funny with social, political, and racial commentary), and the FLY GIRLS.

The Fly Girls would perform in between sketches. Now...the choreography was BAD...and I don't mean bad as in good....(love you Rosie Perez :)...but they were FLY. The outfits were AWESOME!! Kudos to their wardrobe stylist.

Little Dragon/Theophilus London-Bowery Ballroom

Last night I had the pleasure of seeing Swedish band Little Dragon and Brooklyn rapper Theophilus London perform at Bowery Ballroom. It is so refreshing to see artists who are in love with their craft 'do what they do'. Both performances were so pure and raw. (My apologies for the bad photos)

Little Dragon's music is hard to categorize (and I don't think it should be categorized). Electronic-y, soul, R&B, hints of hip-hop all rolled up into one. Lead singer, Yukimi's voice is so soulful, which I wasn't expecting when I was first introduced to Little Dragon's music.

And I just love Theophilus London. Dope music. SUPER dope performer. P.S He was drunk off of whiskey last night. Loved it.

Hey there! Back after a small hiatus. We all have our priorities and Fashion Personified, unfortunately, was not at the top of my list for the past few months. Midterms. Finals. Papers. Travel. More midterms. More finals and more papers. Had a lot of time to think though..."Is Fashion Personified worth it?...what do I want to do with it?...how do I set it apart? ...Mecc, there are a million and one fashion blogs out there, guuurl ain't nobody checkin for you!"...and so on and so forth.

All of these questions are going to be answered as time passes. I mentioned a while back that I believe in letting things evolve organically. No special formula, no defined plan.

...forever. Well Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week is over and the tents at Bryant Park are no more, and they won't be again. Fashion Week will continue, but it has found a new home at Lincoln Center. Whenever I think Fashion Week, I think tents so it's surely gonna be weird adjusting to the new location. And I say this like I have actually worked Fashion Week before. Ha! I'm a mess, forgive me.

Sadly, this is all that I have to say about Fashion Week. I know you all are going to want to string me up for saying this, but I wasn't really interested in Fashion Week this season for whatever reason. I saw more coverage of who was sitting front row than what was actually on the runway. I do have one highlight though. It is a quote that I read in the Metro from security guard Rich Barrett...

"We either get a blizzard in February or a hurricane in September. I don't think God likes fashion".

Seems appropriate for a Sunday : )

Naomi Sims (1948-2009)

Another "first" when it comes to Black Americans in the fashion industry, Naomi Sims was the first Black model to grace the cover of Ladies' Home Journal in November 1968. She modeled for designers such as Halston, Giorgio di Sant'Angelo and Teal Traina. After five years in the modeling industry, Sims went on to establish a wig business geared towards Black women. This business grew into a multi-million dollar empire, expanding to fragrances, cosmetics and books including "How to be a Top Model" and "All about Health and Beauty for Black Women".

Naomi Sims died in August 2009 at the age of 61 after a battle with cancer.
