New York City is one of the fashion capitals of the world, some may think that it is THE fashion capital of the world (I often flip flop between NYC and Paris, myself). Amazing designers, awesome shopping districts, and hipsters and fashionistas all around. But what I have come to notice is that many of the most fashionable of these people are in fact not from New York City, but instead moved there from somewhere else, be it a small town or another major city. I've noticed this is in observation of various reality shows, magazine/blog profiles, the club and even in my classes. They look FLY and when asked where they are from it's always, "I live in [Brooklyn, West Village, East Village, Harlem, etc.] but I am from [insert smalltown, USA here]".
Could it be that those fashionistas from smaller towns have to be creative because of a lack of inspiration around them, therefore they develop their own unique sense of style? And likewise, could it be that because there is so MUCH in NYC (and by 'much' I mean just a lot going on), that instead of being creative and unique, everyone dresses like everyone else or they copy the mannequin at their favorite store?
Now I am in no way saying that there aren't any fashionable New Yorkers. Not saying that at all. I am just stating my own experiences and observations.

Piling It On

photo is licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike 1.0 Generic license.
I visit a lot of different street fashion blogs and a common thread among many of them is that majority of those featured have on a LOT of clothing. A lot of different patterns and textures and seven pairs of tights with socks on top and three shirts and seven vests and just a LOT. I mean, is this style? Is this fashion? There seems to be no method behind the madness, just "let me put on everything in my closet". It is to the point where it is not original because you can go on almost any street fashion website, you are sure to find a "piling it on" type of dresser. But hey, what do I know?

Why So Serious?

Photo: thephotoholic
Why does it seem like everyone working in the fashion industry is mean, catty, snotty, and bitchy? Isn't fashion fun? Isn't it beautiful? Are those in the industry (and those trying to get into the industry) so afraid of someone "taking their spot" that they feel they have to be vicious? I feel that fashion could be taken way more seriously as an art form if everyone wasn't so angry (for lack of a better word), because the anger (again, for lack of a better word) comes off as superficial. Now some may argue that fashion is superficial and those who love it are vain, but with all of the hard work that goes into it, it really is art. Don't want to go on a tangent, so I'll leave it at that. Just something I was pondering.
