I Heart: Philadelphia's Magic Gardens

I went back to Philly a few weeks ago and visited the Magic Gardens. I want to call it a hidden gem but I think I am the only one who really did not notice what it was exactly. See the thing is I walked up and down South Street a many of times and there was this building that was covered with a beautiful mosaic which no one could miss. What I did not know however is that the beautiful artwork is not just on the outside but inside and out in a courtyard type area.

Philadelphia's Magic Gardens was started by Isaiah Zagar during the 1960's. He transforms dilapidated row homes into beautiful works of art, turning the outside into amazing mosaics. The Philadelphia Magic Gardens "seeks to foster civic engagement, community beautification and artistic collaboration". This non-profit organization is located at 1020-1060 South Street and it offers tours, workshops, memberships and rentals for such things as parties, weddings and everything in between. For more information contact (215) 133.0390 or visit www.phillymagicgardens.org.

"Art should not be segregated in museums; it needs to live free among us. No one can predict where art will emerge. It's like a mushroom, with roots that extend for miles and miles underground, unseen. If the climactic conditions are right, the fruit will emerge." -Isaiah Zagar
